How to setup VPN with PPTP Server in DD-WRT
Saturday, August 3, 2013 by Unknown
Setting up VPN on the DD-WRT firmware is an intermediate tutorial due to complex configurations and security settings. For those who doesn't already know what PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) is; PPTP allows you to connect securely from a remote location (such as your office, home, or school) to a LAN (Local Area Network) designated at another location, such as your workplace/office.Note: PPTP has some security flaws and is considered deprecated. An alternative you may find just as easy is OpenVPN.
To setup a VPN through PPTP, login to your web GUI (http://192.168.1.1) and navigate to Services > VPN where you will see under PPTP Server, disabled by default. Select Enable and fill in the following information accordingly.
"PPTP Server", "Broadcast address", and "MPPE encryption" should all be enabled. Once you've enabled those features, look a few options down to find "Server IP". Input an IP that is different from that of your router. For example, if your router IP is 192.168.1.1, you'll want to use 192.168.1.2. (However, using another IP that can come no where near that of your routers, for example, 192.168.4.0 may avoid any conflict errors or sudden disconnection.
For "Client IP", input an IP range that is in your range. You want to keep in mind here, how many hosts you want to allow to connect via your VPN. For example, if your router's IP is set to 192.168.4.1; you want to set your Client's IP range to 192.168.4.100-120 (If your desired permitted hosts is 20.)
For your "Chap Secrets", enter your desired username and password in the box below this settings. Your username and password should be entered in the following format.
user * password *If you wanted to use the username: phantom and password: swordfish. Then the input will be phantom * swordfish *
After you've completed all the options above. Navigate to NAT/QoS > Port Range Forwarding > click "Add" twice.
1. VPN 1723 TCP 192.168.1.1 1723 Enable
2. VPN 1792 TCP 192.168.1.1 1792 Enable
Once done, click Save > Apply Settings. Navigate to Administration > Reboot Router. You must reboot your router in order for this service to be activated.

You really should be using an Android VPN, and even if you don't think so now, at some point in the future you may consider it as important as your internet connection.
